Politics and Activism
DAY 2: CRACKING THE CODE
Activity 1 & 2 and 3

Activity 1: Through Careful Observation [4 points]
There are many incredible people in history who have changed the world. Some have changed what we know about the world and about how it works. We often call these people ‘scientists’ or ‘theorists.’ Famous scientists include Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Katherine Freese, Maria Goeppert Mayer and Sau Lan Wu. Each of these scientists came up with a new theory (idea) about how things work. Much of what they discovered came from observing (watching) things closely.
For this activity, we would like you to select one of the pictures below and to study or observe it closely. What do you see?On your blog, describe the painting in detail. What do you see when you look at it? Please give us as much detail as you can!

Activity 1: Through Careful Observation [4 points]
I deiced to go with the painting " Day and Night", When I took a close look at painting image it was really detailed 100%.Its a really interesting painting it looks like there's a windy swirling wind that changes never changes. The little dots that are like yellow and spots looks like the sun/night stars that glow whenever. In the mountains they look like waterfalls than created the village that is probably called the Day and Night waterfall Village that is a small town located at who knows!?The village looks like its ancient its been there for years they are waterproof and they also have wind/sun/water proof protected things. The thingy that's black brown etc colours looks like a special ancient tree that is weird looking and that's probably whats causing the sky to be like that.
Task Description : This task was based on paintings and descriptions and detail put into our writing describing in our own words! I found this task fun because I love to write and I got to write about this amazing art piece!

Activity 2: Overcoming Adversity [4 points]
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) was an English scientist who was interested in studying the origin (beginning) of the universe. When he was just 21 years old, he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease and, over time, he lost the ability to walk and talk. He needed to use a wheelchair to move around and a computer to help him to talk. The computer made his voice sound a bit funny but, most importantly, it meant he could still communicate with people.
Despite his diagnosis, Stephen Hawking lived a long and very productive life. He showed great determination and perseverance because he didn’t let his physical challenges stop him. He didn’t quit. Instead, he ‘overcame the odds’ and achieved a huge amount in his life.
For this activity, we would like to hear about a time when you, or someone you know, experienced a challenge and overcame it.
On your blog, recount a time when you or someone you know experienced a challenge and overcame it. I have a good friend who moved to NZ three years ago as a refugee from Myanmar. She had been living in Thailand for many years as it was not safe for her to live in Myanmar. When she moved to NZ she couldn’t speak English. Now, she speaks English really well and she had just passed her driver’s licence! I’m so proud of her! - SLJ Team

Activity 2: Overcoming Adversity [4 points]
Task Description : This task for me was based on our fears that we had to overcome, My fear though out my life is Heights but my fear now is kinda going away slowly. I wrote two stories about Roller coasters I forgot where and Fear Falls at Rainbow Ends, It was really an fear fun scared experience back then for sure !!

Activity 3: Hidden Figures [6 points]
Ada Lovelace, born in 1815, is considered to be the ‘first computer programmer’, even though computers had not yet been invented. She was called a computer programmer because she worked out a series of algorithms (instructions) that a machine could use to compute (calculate) difficult maths questions.
Katherine Johnson was another brilliant mathematician who worked with NASA - the North American Space Association. NASA was responsible for sending rockets and people into space. It was Katherine’s job to check all of the calculations that the engineers and astronauts used when designing the spacecraft and flying them into space. In 2016, a movie was made about Katherine Johnson and the other women who worked at NASA during this time. It is called ‘Hidden Figures.’ In the movie, the women had to learn how to do basic coding when NASA started using computers.
Have you ever tried coding?
For this activity we would like you to give coding a try. Click on the link for the website: code.org. If you try an activity and it is too easy, try a harder level!
On your blog, post a screenshot of your completed shape. Underneath the shape tell us what you thought of the coding app. Is it good? Why/why not?

Activity 3: Hidden Figures [6 points]
Task Description : This task was given by Summer Learning Journey Team 2019 - 2020 and this task was all based on Coding , I founded coding hard and I had struggled with it. The game was pretty fun but it had a lot of thinking and Yes I have done other Coding at school and this will definitely go in the coding books for sure!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall Task Description : All these tasks was mid easy and hard the one that was extra hard was definitely the coding one for sure. I enjoyed Activty 1 the most because It was a cool task!

Question of the Day - Whats your favourtive Season?
WOW - what a lot of activities and postings Lilyana - which did you enjoy completing the most? If you liked the coding activity...check out https://www.grinchhourofcode.com . The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June 1889, it describes the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an ideal village. Keep blogging, and commenting on others, to increase your chance of winning one of the awesome prizes and to keep your learning up over the school break!

Hello Lillyana,
ReplyDeleteI will be commenting on activity 3.
I struggled majorly with level 6 as well. Lovely presentation. How did you make the title fonts have a 3D look to them?
Sincerely,
Riiana
Hey Riiana!
DeleteFor the fonts I just lapped the first font to the front and just made the other two go to the back and leaving a bit of a gap to show they are there :)
