Summer Learning Journey!

Week Three: The Post War(s) Era (1951-1999 )
Day 3: Groovy Man (The 1970’s)

Activity 1: Ready to Roll
In the 1970s one of the most common television programmes was called ‘Ready to Roll.’ It was broadcast on Saturday afternoons and hosted by a man named Roger Gascoigne. During the show, Roger would introduce music videos and then play them for the TV audience. He also invited famous people to come onto the show and perform songs that were currently popular.

Watch the following three clips that were shown on the Ready to Roll programme:

When you have finished, rank the clips in order from your most favourite (#1) to your least favourite (#3). Post your rankings on your blog.

My Ranking's

3rd Place - Ray Columbus and the Invaders
2nd Place - New Zealand Underdogs
1st Pace - Golden Harvest

Activity 2: Bell Bottom Pants
Fashion in the 1970s was quite unique. Take a look at the pictures of a ‘typical’ 1970s outfit and tell us, on your blog, two things that you like about 1970s fashion and two things that you don’t like about the fashion of the day. I am not a huge fan of the patterned pants. What about you?

My Favourite things about clothes in 1970s

#1 - How they Mix and Match with Different kinds of Clothing

#2 - That they are Confident they are wearing Crazy Clothing  .

My things I don't like about the clothes in 1970s

#1 - I Just don't Like how the Pants are normal at the top and then at the bottom they are big .

#2 - Sometime's I don't like it when they go all out on simple

Bonus Activity: A Bilingual Schooling System
For much of the past century, schools in New Zealand taught students in only one language – English. In 1972, Ngā Tamatoa member, Mrs. Hana Jackson, submitted a petition to Parliament to ask the government to include the teaching of Te Reo Māori (the Māori language) and Māori culture in New Zealand schools. We still use petitions to this day when we want an organisation (e.g. a school) to make a change.

Think about your school. What is one thing that you would like change. Would you like to learn about different things? Maybe you think school should only be open 3 days a week?

On your blog, write a letter to your principal to try and convince him/her to make the change. Ensure that your letter is polite and respectful.

  1. Hey there Lillyana thanks for completing another set of activities and happy new year! I'm glad to see you're working really hard over your summer break. I hope you are also keeping safe and having a relaxing time.

You've made some interesting observations about the fashion in the 1970's. It's great that you've listed a couple of things you like and also don't like about the fashion then. I also find the pants a bit weird. I think they didn't need too much confidence to wear crazy clothes because it wasn't crazy at the time. I guess it's just when you look back on it.

Do you prefer the fashion today or in the 1970's?

    Thanks, Billy

  3. Hey Lillyana, thank you!

I've enjoyed reading your letter to your principal about how teachers deserve to get more sleep. I am a teacher so I would have to agree with you. It would be nice to get more sleep, perhaps sleep in a bit longer. Maybe school could start later. Or we could have naps during the day?

Sounds like a great idea. Is there anything else that you would like to change about your school?

    Thanks, Billy

  4. Hey Billy ,

Yes I would like to change something else to about my school is the rubbish some people think it is okay to litter around our school but its not okay because that is not looking after our own environment and its just no okay for people in my school to litter where ever they want and whatever they want to litter .

    Thanks Kind Regards ,

    Lillyana

  5. Hey Lillyana, I couldn't agree with you more. It's a real shame when people litter, it makes the school look terrible too. You need some kind of challenge or game that encourages people to put their rubbish in the right place.

You could employ a group of students to be 'The Litter Police'. It could be their job to go around the school and make sure people are doing the right thing with their rubbish.

Or your principal could challenge the students to have a litter-free term and if the school succeeds then he will buy you all ice creams or something.

    Thanks, Billy
