!SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY!

Week Four: Contemporary Kiwis

Day 2: Turn of the Century (2000-2010)

Day 2: A Decade of Sport

Activity 1: Chasing Great
Over the past 17 years New Zealand has experienced a number of sporting highlights, perhaps none larger than the back-to-back Rugby World Cup victories in 2011 and 2015. In both competitions our national rugby team, the All Blacks, was captained by a man name
d Richie McCaw. He is arguably one of the best rugby players of all time. A movie called Chasing Great was recently created to document his incredible rugby career.

Please watch the trailer for Chasing Great and read about Richie McCaw online. On your blog tell us three things that you learned about Richie that you did not know beforehand. What else would you like to know about Richie?

#1 Fact -
Richie Mccaw has also equaled the Rugby record for most appearances at the Rugby World Cup with Jason Leonard.

#2 Fact -
Richie McCaw was named as the All Blacks captain for the first time for the Test against Wales in 2004 aged 23

#3 Fact -
Richie McCaw was Born on the 31st of December in 1980 Also his full name is Richard Hugh Mccaw.

Activity 2: Sporting Heroes
In 2015, a kiwi golfer named Lydia Ko became the youngest woman in the world to reach the #1 ranking.  She was only 17 years old. Many people from here in New Zealand and overseas really admire her and think of her as a modern-day sporting hero. Who is your sporting hero? They can be a famous athlete, or even a member of your family or community. It’s completely up to you.

On your blog tell us about your sporting hero. Who are they? Why are they a hero? Include a photo of them in your blog post.

My sporting hero is Lisa Carrington. She is an incredible rower, and last year she was awarded the prestigious  Lonsdale Cup for her amazing results in 2016! She spends hours training, and I think her commitment to her sport is inspiring.

I Think my Sporting Hero Muhammad Ali He was a Boxer . Muhammad Ali was known as an inspiring, much more both inside and outside the ring . Muhammad Ali 's record of the most wins in heavyweight title bouts in modern boxing history at 22 was unbeaten for more than 35 years!!!! But Sadly Muhammad Ali had Passed Away January 17, 1942 – June 3, 2016 at the Age of 74 . . I Think that Muhammad Ali's Sport is Amazing and Inspiring .
RIP Muhammad Ali

Bonus Activity: Shake it Off
In recent years, many New Zealanders have embraced a new form of exercise called Zumba©. It was developed by a man named Alberto Perez who lives in the country of Columbia. He created Zumba by bringing together many different dance styles including: cumbia, mambo, hip-hop, soca, samba, salsa, tango, merengue and mambo.

            The Merengue                                      The Tango

Choose one of the dance styles mentioned above and click on the name to read more about it. Once you are done, post three interesting facts about the dance style on your blog. In which country did it originate? Who originally created it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Dance Style I have picked is : The Salsa

Cuban Son created the Salsa.
The Salsa is created with my different styles and musical techniques. All of these came of Cuba. I Think I have Seen Many People Do the Salsa Dance's On TV and Shows and Program's . Even thought the modern Salsa comes for Cuba there are still many different lands and parts of history

  1. Kia Ora Lillyana,

My name is Hazel and I am the cluster manager for Uru Manuka and part of the Summer Learning Journey blogging team. You might remember me coming into your school with Rachel last year?

    What a great post!

I can see that you've done quite a bit of research about Richie McCaw. Wasn't he a great All Black? I didn't know that he was so young when he first became captain. That's very impressive. Do you like to watch rugby? I love to watch the All Blacks play, especially during the World Cup matches.

You have written a very moving tribute to Muhammad Ali; he was a very inspirational athlete. Are you interested in boxing? Well done attributing your images also.

Salsa dancing is one of my favourite styles of dance. It's amazing to watch, and I love the costumes that the dancers wear. Is there anything more that you would like to know about salsa dancing that you weren't able to find online?

I look forward to reading more of your posts. Keep up the great work!

    Hazel :)
