Day 1 In the Beginning - Week 1 : A Place to Stand - Summer Learning Journey 2018 - 2019

!!!Summer Learning Journey !!

WEEK 1: A Place to Stand
Day 1 In the Beginning

Welcome to the first week of the Summer Learning Journey. For our first week, we are going to be learning all about the land habitats here in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is going to be a great adventure!

DAY 1: In the Beginning...

Activity 1: The Legend of New Zealand [4 points]
According to Māori mythology, much of Aotearoa New Zealand was formed when Māui, a powerful demigod, fished it out of the sea. Legend has it that Māui created a magical fish hook from the jawbone of his grandmother and that one day he took his hook, boarded a boat, and rode out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Once at sea, he threw his magical hook into the water and caught a fish. This ‘fish’ was actually the North Island of New Zealand! In honour of this legend, the North Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Ika a Māui or ‘Māui’s fish’ and the South Island of New Zealand is sometimes referred to as Te Waka a Māui or ‘Māui’s canoe’.

To learn more cool facts about New Zealand, check out the Tourism NZ website. Read the fun facts posted on the website and choose your ‘Top 3.’ On your blog, post your ‘Top 3 Fun Facts’ about NZ in your own words.

For this task I had Decided to pick 5 of my choices
1 - Did you know that In New Zealand there are %100 no Snakes like not a single one in New Zealand.

2 - Ruler Elizabeth II is formally Queen of New Zealand, spoke to in the nation by a Governor General.

3 - This was the principal nation to have its three best places of intensity held by ladies; Prime Minister Helen Clark, Governor General Dame Silvia Cartwright and the Chief Justice Sian Elias.

4 - With in about 2.5 Million Cars that New Zealanders REALLY LOVE and about 4 Million People Making One of This counties the Highest Cars Ownership d in the world .

5 - Dairy ranchers deliver an incredible 100 Kilograms of Butter and 65 Kilograms of cheddar every year for every individual living in New Zealand.

Activity 2: North and South [4 points]

The country of New Zealand is made up of two main islands – the North Island and the South Island. Approximately 77% of the New Zealand population live in the North Island. Many of these people (including our Summer Learning Journey design team) live in Auckland city. Auckland is a great place to live with lots of amazing parks, beautiful waterways and stunning scenery to enjoy. It is also a busy, vibrant city with many cafes, museums, galleries and theatres to visit. I feel lucky to call Auckland my ‘hometown.’

Now it is time to think about your hometown. What is special about where you live? On your blog, describe your hometown. Be sure to include lots of describing words (adjectives) in your post.

I am Live in Glen Innes but for short it is G.I I am pretty sure it is Located in the East Side of auckland . What’s Special about my hometown is that everyone gets along and there is a Big Number of People that live there and enjoy it there and mostly spending time with there family and friends . I enjoyed every single thing about G. I but mostly spending time with my family and friends .  G.I has Supermarkets , Shops , Fruit and Vegs Shops , Mcdonalds , KFC , Dairy's , Fish and chips , Takeaways , Te Oro , Internet and much more and of course school’s , Collage , Primary and intermediate , Kindergarten and more !!! I would recommend for you to come to the East Side of Auckland to vist G.I and look around because I think you will love it!!!

Activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby [10 points]

Antarctica is the world’s coldest continent. Even though it is made up of ice, it is also the driest continent in the world. In fact, it hasn’t rained there for nearly 2 million years! It is home to many animals such as whales, seals, birds, and fish. There are no permanent human residents (people who live there all the time) in Antarctica, however scientists do visit and stay in Antarctica for a while to study it.

This year the airline, Air New Zealand, filmed their safety video in Antarctica. They used some fabulous actors from Hornby Primary School in Christchurch. Just like on aeroplanes, we also need to keep safe and be smart online. We need to think about the type of information we are sharing online, who we are sharing information with, and how to have a positive digital footprint.

On your blog, make a copy of this footprint and, inside the footprint, explain how you create a positive, digital footprint. What do you do to stay smart online?.

So I have put a couple of sayings in my footprint like Positive Information and more and I had went on explore to find some images i could use like Blogger , Footprints , Laptop and WiFi and More , Once I had did that I deiced to say what it means by that word .

God Bless you and your family and friends always stay safe in the holidays and make sure to tune in for more blogpost's coming soon !!! If you haven't joined the summer learning journey click here to sign up and to learn awesome things in the summer holidays !!

  1. Kia ora Lillyana,
My name is Patricia and I am part of the Summer Learning Journey team. How nice is to see that your are actively engaging on completing the activities, way to go! I am here to comment and support your posts and guide you through this program.
Day 1 - activity 1: In the beginning - Thanks for sharing such a cool and curious facts about New Zealand! I like how you went beyond of the activity request and actually wrote 5 instead of only 3 interesting facts, good work!
I also feel relieved that we don't have snakes or any predators because that means that we can get into the wild without having to be concern about be eaten or poison by any wild animal. I think that we don't have any snakes because New Zealand is geographically isolated from every other country in the world. There is over a thousand kilometres of ocean between New Zealand and the nearest large land mass. There is simply no species of snake that can travel that far through water.

Day 1 - activity 2: North and South - How nice to know that you enjoy your life in Glen Innes. I live not far from there in Meadowbank and I work at Huckleberry in Glen Innes and I really like there too. What I like about the place is that there is a strong sense of community, I love the Te Oro space because they offer different art learning courses for everyone and I am really into art. Have you been at the Bradley Lane (just across the street from Te Oro), to see the graphite art in there? I really recommend it because the art there is very inspiring! Furthermore, I like that walk / bike way under the train station that goes all the way up to Sunhill Garden Centre at St. Johns road because on summer I love to bike ride there with my daughter. Anyway, there is a great quote about seeing beauty in this word and goes like this "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", which for me means to be content and have gratitude in our hearts for the life we live and I can see that you have that. Well done!

Day 1 - activity 3: Ice, Ice Baby - You did an outstanding job in here as I liked how you wrote very specific advise using images and clear description. You made this post very visual and helpful.
    Way to go Lillyana!
    Kia kaha,
    Patricia
