DAY 2: Protecting Our Own

Activity 1: A Flying Fox [4 points]

New Zealand has some of the most beautiful forests in the world. Both New Zealanders and tourists, alike, enjoy walking through these forests. Unfortunately, constantly walking through forests can damage the plants and animals (flora and fauna) that live there. In an attempt to protect the local flora and fauna, an eco-tourism company in Rotorua came up with an idea. The Rotorua Canopy Tours Company designed a series of ziplines that sit above the forest canopy (top). People can ‘zip’ from one section of the forest to another, looking down on the beautiful natural areas below. To see what ziplining looks like, check out this video.
I have tried ziplining and I really enjoyed it, however, I must admit that I was pretty scared to try it at first. How would you feel if you had the chance to go ziplining in Rotorua?
On your blog, tell us how you would feel about going ziplining in Rotorua. Try to use some descriptive words (adjectives) and action words (verbs) in your post!.

Activity 2: A Protective Plant [4 points]
There are concerns about the water quality of some of the rivers, streams and oceans in and around New Zealand. Some people have suggested that we plant flowers and plants on the banks of our most polluted rivers to stop the spread of the pollution. Apparently, the plants can act as filters, absorbing some of the chemicals (pollutants) that are moving across the land, on their way to the river.
Planting can be a lot of fun! Have you ever planted a garden? Aronui and I are going to make our very own edible garden this year. We are going to plant a number of veggies, fruits and herbs, including mint, coriander, parsley, lemongrass, onions, tomatoes, beans, zucchinis, kumara and strawberries. Yum! If you could plant an edible garden what would you plant in it?

On your blog list 10 veggies, fruits, or herbs that you would plant in your garden.

Activity 3: A House is Not a Home [10 points]

New Zealand is home to some unique wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. While we work very hard to protect our natural habitats so, too, do people living and working in other countries. One of the oldest international wildlife conservation organisations is called ‘Fauna & Flora International’ (FFI). They support a number of projects around the world, including those working to protect Lansan trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, and national reserves in Mozambique. Read about each of these projects and choose the one that interests you the most.
On your blog, tell us which project you find most interesting and why..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Task For A House is Not a Home

The Project I founded the most Interesting was The Sustainable Lansan Project , Why you ask because the endangered Lansan tree because why on earth would they be cutting this kind of tree's down because remember Trees oxygen when they use energy from sunlight to make FRESH Air I mean ALL TREE'S and that all Humans breath from ... But this Tree is a Different Trees unlike other trees because brings evil spirits I believe it says but also when the Lansan tree's when damage can  be infection , traditional harvesting methods quickly kill the trees from the people of FFI, the Forestry Department and volunteers from Durrell Wildlife Conservation , But with a discovery they founded out a new Method for this project .

Task Description : For this task we had to chose which Project that we found interesting of out the three which was Lansan trees in the Caribbean, fruit forests in Tajikistan, Mozambique and as you can see I have Chosen the Lansan Trees In Caribbean because that the project that had hooked me to be writing about that project . Hope you Enjoy my Piece of Writing !!!

  3. Hi Lillyana,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. Oh my, you've done a super job of these activities. Wow!!!

You've created a wonderful story about what you think you might feel like if you were way up in the air on a zipline. Good for you! I think I would have butterflies in my stomach too! I hope you'll have a chance to try it one day! It certainly is a good idea to have people see the area of Rotorua without walking all around the hot pools and geysers. If there are too many tourists the forest floor and the pool areas can be very damaged, can't they. Better to get a view from above!

I love love love your vegetable/fruit/herb garden ideas. You've gone above and beyond to list a wonderful number of delicious, healthy foods that would be terrific to grow in your very own garden! Do you have a garden at your home already?

I'm hoping to create a veggie garden at my house next summer. All our gardens are full of flowers at the moment. If we could grow more of our own food then we wouldn't be buying products that have been flown in from other distant places - that would save on the burning of fossil fuels. Yeah!

Congratulations on making such a super garden plan!

Finally, you did a good job of explaining your interest in the sustainable Lansan tree project. It's very saddening that people cut trees down or damage them in order to use just part of them for our purposes. Fortunately someone has come up with a method of getting resin from the trees without damaging them - the resin is used for insect repellent. We need to try to get what we need from nature without destroying it, don't we?!

Well done on all of these activities, Lillyanna. You certainly worked very hard on them!!!

I hope you're really happy at school this term. Good luck this year!!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
