W.A.L.T = TO COMPLETE ALL THE SLJ ACTIVITY'S I HAVEN'T COMPLETED YET SUMMER LEARNING JOURNEY 2018 - 2019 WEEK 4 PROTECT AND PRESERVE DAY 4 MAKING PROMISES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Activity 1: Campaigning for Conservation [4 points]
New Zealand is home to so many beautiful, unique and, sometimes, endangered animals and habitats. The Forest & Bird organisation is working really hard to protect vulnerable animals and places in NZ. They are doing everything that they can to raise money and to raise awareness so that everyone knows about these issues. These are called ‘campaigns.’ Check out the Forest & Bird campaigns site to learn more about them.
Imagine, that you have been hired by Forest & Bird New Zealand to work on one of their campaigns. It is your job to come up with a catchy slogan for the campaign. A slogan is a short phrase or sentence that is used to advertise something. Check out examples of common slogans and logos below.

On your blog, tell us which campaign you have chosen to support and provide us with a slogan for that campaign.

Activity 2: The Plastic Pledge [4 points]
Over the past few decades some of New Zealand’s beaches have become dumping grounds for waste and rubbish. Almost 80% of this waste is made up of plastic items. Yikes!

Some companies in New Zealand have heard about the problem and agreed to cut down on their use of plastic. Countdown supermarkets, for example, have announced that they will stop giving out plastic bags to customers.  What do you think of this idea? What do your friends and family think? Is it a good idea or not?
For this activity, please ask one member of your family and/or a friend what they think about Countdown’s decision to go ‘plastic bag free.’

On your blog, tell us what they think about Countdown’s decision to stop using plastic bags.

My Presentation about The Plastic Pledge!!!

Task Description : For this ask we had to ask a family member or friend about there opinion about countdown's decision to stop using plastic bags and only use reusable bags instead , I have asked my dad for his opinion of what he thinks about countdown to stop using plastic bags and this is what he said ......... Hope ya enjoy !!!

Activity 3: Restricted Access [10 points]
While much of our programme has focused on New Zealand, it is important that we also consider the environment in other places as well. One of the most unusual and spectacular sites to visit outside of New Zealand is called Machu Picchu. It is an ancient city that was built high up in the mountains in the country of Peru in South America. You have to take a train and/or walk through a series of mountains and valleys to reach it.

Over the past few decades millions of tourists have made the trek to Machu Picchu. Unfortunately, this has damaged the area and the local government has decided to restrict the number of visitors to the site each year. This decision has upset a lot of tourists who really want to see Machu Picchu but aren’t allowed to go.

On your blog, tell us what you think about the government’s decision to restrict the number of tourists able to visit this special site. Is it fair? Be sure to tell us why you feel the way that you do.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Google Drawings for Restricted Access

Task Description : For this task we had to give our opinion weather the Government should let Tourists able to visit this special site  or weather to Restrict the Area , I have created a Google Drawings to tell you guys which one I have chosen !!! Enjoy :)

  1. Fakalofa Lahi Atu Lillyana!

Lillyana you have created a great Summer Learning Journey activities! I enjoy each creation that you have made for each activity.

Your first activity is about choosing either Mc Donalds or Nike , and you choose Mc Donalds. I am also in love with Mc Donalds! Its one of my favourite type of take away's ever. My favourite thing to get at Mc Donalds would be a Mc Chicken combo.

Your doing such a great job at summer blogging. Keep it up!

    Cheers ,
    Leilani :)

  3. Hi Lillyana,

It's Leslie here, a member of the Summer Learning Journey team. You've done a lot of work on all of these activities - well done!!

Your slide show about Countdown's decision to stop giving out plastic bags is just super. I'm so glad that you asked your dad's opinion. I agree that it is very important for us to use reusable bags and products as much as possible because plastic is contributing to pollution on our earth. Eliminating plastic is a good choice!!

I see that you've misunderstood the activity that has to do with creating a slogan. You thought you were to choose between Mcdonald's and Nike, but the actual task is to create a phrase or slogan to advertise one of the campaigns that Forest & Bird New Zealand are running. You were to look at their website, choose a campaign and then go from there. So we can't give you full points for this activity.

You've also done the activity about restricting visitors to Machu Piichu. This is the site of an ancient city that used to be inhabited by people hundreds of years ago.

Your argument in support of limiting tourists is because you're concerned about the safety of the tourists. If you read the activity description again, you'll see that the concern is about how much damage is being done to the site of this old city. The government isn't worried about visitor safety.

I agree with you that the government has made this decision for a good reason and I would support it too. Many places around the world are having a hard time knowing how to handle the number of tourists that are visiting special places. Just as when we have family over to visit our homes, there's lots of work to be done to clean up after visitors and there's sometimes damage that's done by accident. Machu Piichu is being worn down by the number of tourists coming through...

I'm really glad that you've tried so hard to do all of these activities. I think your efforts are super! I hope you'll continue to work hard at school this year and I hope you'll have a very successful term 1!!!

    Cheers,

    Leslie
